FREE CHOICE

Excerpts from Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, Letters, vol. 2 (Jerusalem, 1984),
letter 379 (1911), translated by Prof. Jonathan Garb, Hebrew University of
Jerusalem:

The justice that appears to us in relation to good and evil that extends to free
choice, is nothing but the superficial aspect; … however, the internal aspect of it is
more exalted, … so that no moral question can apply to it, for it is higher than
morality and all of its values. …
This is the wealth of the divine science, whose flag is born by our nation, to
announce the absolute freedom of the higher absolute reality. …
And I am not dealing now with the psychological questions, to clarify what is this
essence of life that is revealed by free will. ... We say then that our very essence is
free choice… so that the reality of the will that is manifested in practical choices is
only a shadow and imprint of the hidden depth of free will. And time and space
themselves… are also a limited shadow of our attainment of the higher free
reality.
It is easy to understand that drawing closer to the absolute good and free will of
divinity develops all of existence. It reveals the light of individual soul
